Folks, most dog trainers and dog training books are horrible.
Maybe it would cost less and you won't permanently ruin your dog if you call a professional dog trainer FIRST. . . . The Dog Psychology Method is based on respect and trust, not bribing with food or compulsion. David Baron's Siberian Husky "Happy Puppy" at DogAnswers Ranch in Roseville, CA Focus on the psychology of the relationship. When you have the right kind of relationship with your dog there are virtually no behavior problems and the dog obeys without a leash.
"Happy Puppy" in the rose garden, and below "Happy" and "Grendel" the Komondor.

It is very important to teach your dog to wait and be very calm.
Our big secret is we get dogs to be good citizens and relax around their people first.
A big part of a dog's job is to wait. If your dog won't "Stay" 20 minutes to an hour YOU HAVE LITTLE. We almost always get dogs to do this for their owners during the same day of the second lesson. Don't forget to teach your dog that being obedient and performing commands is the most wonderful thing in the world or your dog will look like Archie the Border Collie Mix on the right. Archie mostly cares about the ball.
"Lizzie" and "Happy" on "Sit-Stay" checking out "Blackie" The SuperDog program consists of three parts:Happy, Shiela and Spirit on "Sit-Stay" If you don't win psychologically all you are left with is hitting, kicking, screaming, being mean or bribing with food. . .Either it pretty much happens on the first lesson and there is a fairly dramatic change in the dog's attitude and behavior or there probably never will be.
How do you do that you ask? We get the dog on "Down" which is a submissive position and "Heel" which is a subordinate position ALMOST ALWAYS during the first lesson.
No Matter how aggressive, dominant, stubborn, aggressive or BIG, we get the dog on "Down" during the first lesson.
Usually we get the dog to "Heel" during the first lesson too. "Heel" is when you walk your dog and the front paws are equal with or behind your feet.
If the dog won't "Down" and "Heel," you have nothing. Maybe the dog loves you, but surely does not respect you. Don't expect much in the way of obedience if your dog won't do "Down" from 30 to 40 feet away and "Heel" while walking on a leash.
If the dog won't "Down" and "Heel" and you don't win psychologically you will never ever get the dog to behave OFF-LEASH.
SIT is HUGE. If your dog knows the command well and won't "Sit-Stay," "Up-Sit" or insists on laying down when you say "Sit," that means you have a defiant dog. These types of psychological battles when won usually result in a dramatic change in the dog's behavior and level of cooperation.
"Sit-Stay" How to make HUGE strides: Deal with Deficiencies
Also focus on getting the dog to be calm, to be mellow and relax. Ask yourself, "What do I need to do to get the dog to conform to the behavior I need?"
"Stand-Stay" For most people that first means calling in an expert who can show them how to get the best results in the least amount of time at the home.
We are confident that when you consider our program and meet us that you won't want other dog trainers.
