The All Purpose Cure
Okay, let's be serious, there's no such thing as an all
purpose cure. Each dog and their particular behavior problem is unique.
However, there are some similarities that come up often enough we thought it
made sense to repeat them here. You might try these before you begin any other
behavior modification.

Be certain your dog is healthy.
That housebreaking problem might be the result of a
bladder infection. Not listening to your commands could be caused by an ear
blockage or the on-set of deafness. Go to your vet for a check up before
assuming that your dog has suddenly developed a bad habit.
A tired dog is a happy dog.
If your dog is tired from exercise such as going for a jog
or walk with you or chasing a ball or Frisbee, they are less likely to use
their energy taking the baseboards off the walls. Of course, dog training
classes are a great way to use energy and keep their minds on something other
than your prized rugs.
Bored dogs get creative.
Is your dog left to their own entertainment for long
periods? That get boring so many dogs make up things to do like eating only the
left shoe of every pair of shoes in your closet. There are lots of ways to keep
your dog from being bored.
-
Keep them exercised, see # 2 above.
-
Some dogs are entertained by leaving the radio or
television on for them when you leave. I don't personally believe that they
watch the TV or dance to the music but some believe it gives them a comfort
level that they aren't alone in the house.
-
Leave them with safe, engaging toys when you leave. A Kong
with kibble or a treat inside can keep many dogs entertained for hours while
they try to get the goodies out. Simply rotating their toys every few days may
make the old toys seem new and very entertaining.
Keep them away from danger, or danger away from
them.
If they always get in the garbage and make a
mess, keep them in a room away from the garbage or the garbage up on counter
level. Should they learn to leave garbage alone? Of course! But why give them
opportunities for trouble when you can take it away quite easily. If you're not
going to be gone all day, crating is a great
idea.
